Q. What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative research?

Qualitative and quantitative studies collect different types of data so their data collection methods differ. The way the data gathered is analyzed differs as well.

Qualitative studies rely on sources that detail how people think or respond. Data collection methods include interviews, focus groups, documents, personal accounts or papers, cultural records, and observation.

Quantitative studies rely on numerical or measurable data. Data collection methods include experiments, questionnaires, surveys, and database reports.

There are benefits and limitations associated with both approaches.

Qualitative benefits:

  • allows for creativity
  • varied interpretations possible
  • flexible
  • scope of research project can change as more information is gathered

Qualitative limitations:

  • subjectivity
  • personal bias can influence findings
  • smaller sample size may result in narrow  conclusion

Quantitative benefits:

  • produce objective data
  • results clearly communicated through statistics and numbers
  • quick analysis with the benefit of data computing software

Quantitative limitations:

  • more restrictive
  • participants cannot tailor their responses or add context
  • larger data sample is required which calls for a larger pool of participants
